Universal PAT Calibrator: UPC-3
In 2002, Albury Calibration & Engineering developed a PAT Calibrator capable of testing and calibrating most Portable Appliance Testers (commonly referred to as PATs). The latest model, the UPC-3 Universal PAT Calibrator, will calibrate all PATs, including PAT units that check Leakage Current.
Please note that Worksafe / Workcover requires correct safety procedures to be implemented to Australian Standards. The relevant Australian Standard: AS 3760 (2003) “In service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment” requires all Personal Appliance Testers (PATs) to be calibrated every 12 months.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The UPC-3 represents a ‘dummy’ appliance to any PAT. It will test the PAT calibration status of any Appliance Tester or PAT .
The UPC-3 will determine both PASS and FAIL conditions for the following:
- Insulation (resistance)
- Earthbond (Low Current)
- Class 1 and 2 Earth Leakage Currents
- Insulation Voltage Measurements
- Continuity Resistance
This allows the operator to decide if the PAT unit under test:
- meets Australian standards,
- is within the manufacturers specification.
Also, the UPC-3 quickly verifies any adjustment of the PAT. (Some PATs may need manufacturers software for adjustment.)

WHAT UNITS CAN IT TEST?
The UPC-3 Universal PAT Calibrator can be used to calibrate any Personal Appliance Tester to any Australian or International Standard. Models include, but are not limited to:
- SEAWARD - Supernova, Europa, PAC3760, PAC500, PRIME TEST PT200, 2000i
- TNT – TNT, TNT+, TNTel
- TRIO – SafeTcheck: Mark D, Professional
- AEGIS – Patrol, Pro
- KYORITSU - All models
- FLUKE - All models
The Universal PAT Calibrator can also be used to calibrate
- Meggers
- Insulation Testers
- Earth Testers
- Continuity Testers

TESTIMONIAL
I would like to thank you for designing a wonderful unit that enables me to calibrate Portable Appliance Testers (PATs) in an efficient and timely manner.
The School of Engineering at the University of Western Sydney has four PATs that are used to test the holding of electrical items in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS3760. Not only has it saved the School of Engineering valuable financial resources in calibration fees but it has made a significant saving in combining several standards and making them portable so that the Calibrator can go to the Tester reducing down time of the Tester.
The unit can be used with other models of PAT instruments besides Seward which was a significant factor in purchasing this unit. Other calibrators that I investigated were brand specific. The other factor in the UPC-3’s favour was its ease of use and its ruggedness. The layout is clear and well defined and the quality of the components are extremely high.
I would recommend this unit to anyone as it will be an asset to any business or institution with a large inventory of PATs that require annual calibration.
